Simon Raven Cult feat. Nick Simper - Single 1966

Side A - I Wonder If She Remembers Me
Side B - Sea of Love (Wanted) no participa Nick Simper en el lado B

• Geoff Glover-Wright (Also Buddy Britten) (Lead Vocals/Guitar)
• Tony Richards (Keyboards)
• Nick Simper (Bass)
• Roger Pinner (Drums)

Nick Simper
"Back on the mainland, we began to get ourselves into mode as the Simon Raven Cult, whilst awaiting the return of "Simon", who had stayed in Jersey for an extra month to tie up a few loose ends. Finally he arrived back, staying at his parents' home in Kenton near Harrow. We had been calling him by his real name, Geoff, for some time, so there was no confusion with the change of name. The air of anticipation was heightened when we were presented with a new song by music publishers Shapiro Bernstein, titled "I Wonder If She Remembers Me". This proved to be a commercial sounding rocker with a strong hook, a great first record from the "new" group, we thought. Once again we assembled at Pye Studios with John Schroeder at the helm. This time the result was a much heavier record, with Geoff creating a great fuzz sound from his Stratocaster, achieved by making cuts in a speaker cone which he had turned towards the ceiling with his silver identity bracelet placed inside it!"

"Feeling confident that I could find myself a new gig I decided that it was time to move on. I was swiftly replaced by an excellent player called Brad, who played on the 'B' side of the new single, a pretty good cover of the old Marty Wilde hit, "Sea of Love". Any regrets I felt were swiftly dispelled when I received a copy of the record, which bore one single name on the label, that of Simon Raven! The Cult had vanished before it even began!"

Boz : single 1968 feat. Ritchie Blackmore , Jon Lord and Ian Paice

I SHALL BE RELEASED (Dylan) prod DEREK LAWRENCE arranger JON LORD
DOWN IN THE FLOOD (Dylan) Prod. DEREK LAWRENCE arranger RAYMON BURREL

One of several musicians to have emerged from a difficult term with King Crimson into a career with a much more commercially viable future, Boz Burrell first cut his musical teeth as a vocalist with various local bands around the Norfolk area. Upon leaving college he turned professional with Lombard and the Tea Time Four, which, after bringing on board keyboardist Ian McLagan (who would later throw in his lot with The Small Faces), became the jazz-oriented unit The Boz People. In the short years of their existence, The Boz People made a reasonable name for themselves through live performances (occasionally as the backing band for singer Kenny Lynch) and managed to secure a recording deal with Columbia. Four singles were released by the band between '65 and '66 (You're Just the Kind of Girl I Wanted, Meeting Time, Pinnochio, and The Baby Song); public interest remained elsewhere, however, and so the various members ultimately moved on to other projects. A period followed as an itinerant musician amongst a succession of soul groups (The Sidewinders, Feel for Soul), but none of these possessed sufficient focus to establish a lasting presence in the business. During this period Burrell released two singles of cover tunes simply using the name Boz: I Shall Be Released (coupled with a version of Bob Dylan's Down In The Flood)Raymond Boz Burrell (v) , Ritchie Blackmore (g) ,Jon Lord (k) , Chas Hodges (bass) , Ian Paice o Carlo Little (segun Nick Simper) (d) ,Del Newman (arr. String Section)
hubo otro single despues de este ( tambien en 1968 ) con Light My Fire de los Doors , algunas biografias lo nombran a Blackmore como parte del proyecto , todavia no encontre ese single

ST.VALENTINE'S DAY MASSACRE feat. JON LORD

A - Brother Can you Spare a Dime
B - Al's Party
From DPAS .... "The most bizarre stage in the Artwoods' career followed soon after. During their absence, Johnny Jones had secured another one-off deal for the band, this time with Fontana. The label's manager, Jack Baverstock, had come up with the idea of dressing the group as gangsters, and relaunching them under the new name of the The St. Valentine's Day Massacre. In reality, the proposal was a lame attempt to cash in on the gangster craze sweeping the country following the success of the film "Bonnie and Clyde". Wood was unequivocal in his condemnation of the episode. "It was a bloody stupid idea . but they reasoned that Georgie Fame was getting away with it — and we badly needed a gimmick." In a fit of desperation the group agreed to the idea, and a single, Bing Crosby's "Brother Can You Spare A Dime" / "Al's Party", was released under their new name, initially coming in an appropriate picture sleeve. Though it flopped in the U.K. it went to number one in Denmark and the group spent three weeks touring Scandinavia as chart topping stars, although Derek Griffiths looked back on the trip merely as "a few heavy-hearted gigs with a changed line-up."

"Actually I felt bloody ridiculous," says Lord. "It wasn't too bad abroad but back in England we had to wear these suits and I felt stupid playing R&B dressed like that. We all did." Despite the Scandinavian success, various promotional appearances with actress Faye Dunaway (who'd played Bonnie Parker in the Hollywood film), and a show in the window of the Lord John shop in Carnaby Street which was covered by cinema newsreel, the group disbanded. Wood concluded: "It was a sad way to go, but when all is said and done it was a good single. It had a great atmosphere and I still really like it."

in 1968 a new vocalist and keyboardist to St. Valentine's Day Massacre (Rod Goodway ,vocals and Steve on keyboards)
The itinerary was; two gigs in Paris & then back to England for fourteen nights without a break. A grueling enough schedule without the accompanying tour partying with such bands as The Spencer Davis Group, The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band & The Move.
Once this tour ended, there was no work on the horizon, so the band disbanded. Malcolm Poole went on to play with John Mayall, Derek Griffiths went on to be a session musician & then joined 'Satisfaction' in 1971. Colin Martin went on to be a BBC Producer & Rod ran into Andy Rickell who was playing with a band called 'White rabbit'.

The Outlaws - Pre - Ritchie Blackmore History (Singles ,Demos & Unreleased)

BILLY GREY & THE STORMERS / THE STORMERS
May 1960

Billy Grey (vocals)
Billy Kuy (guitar)
Reg Hawkins (guitar)
Chas Hodges (bass)
Bobby Graham (drums)

The group played the usual round of youth clubs, dance halls and holiday camps
But a few months later, in October 1960, Billy Grey left the group to get married and abandons the music.

Reg Hawkins - Billy Gray - Danny Rivers - Bobby Graham - the Emoire Theatre Butlins Holiday Camp, Filey, Yorkshire 1960

To Bobby Graham History: the invitation to join his first rock 'n' roll band in Spring I960 proved irresistible. An old school-mate, Billy Halsey, had formed Billy Gray and the Stormers. "Billy knocked on my door and said 'do you fancy going off to Butlins Holiday camp in Filey in Yorkshire for a summer season gig' remembers Graham. He declined -no, I'm a jazz musician". so the offer was made more attractive. there will be plenty of booze, plenty of girls' -'no, no' - 'it's 20 pounds a week'. Suddenly I became a rock 'n' roll musician".

The Stormers (Butlins, Filey, Yorkshire 1960)
Left to right: - Bobby Graham -Billy Kuy - Reg Hawkins - Chas Hodges

So off Graham went to Yorkshire, playing the chart hits of the day, mainly covers of Cliff and the Shadows. In September I960, after the Butlin's season, the Stormers split when Halsey got married. Joe Meek was interested in Mike Berry, but didn't like his backing band, so the Stormers were talked into reforming. Meek renamed them The Outlaws in late I960, "I thought (The Outlaws) was a bit camp. At the time we did what we were told" recalls Graham.

MICK BERRY AND THE OUTLAWS

Mick Berry & The (Originals) Outlaws 1960

The original Outlaws date back to December 1960 when they, as members of the then recently disbanded 'Billy Gray & The Stormers', reformed without Billy, on the promise of better things to come in the shape of a recording contract from the legendary producer Joe Meek, initially to back his newly signed artist Mike Berry. As it transpired, when Joe realised what a talented bunch they were, he was very keen to get them to record in their own right, as well as back virtually every other solo artist under Joe’s control.

The First apperance on record was Backing Berry is on a version of the Shirelles "Will you Love me Tomorrow" the track boasted a big orchestral arragement by Charles Blackwell and the vocal part is reputed to have needed more than twenty takes before meek was finally satisfied ...

SIDE A - My Baby Doll (Decca F 11314 -1961)
SIDE B - Will You Love Me Tomorrow (Decca F 11314 -1961)

Mick Berry & Chas Hodges

THE OUTLAWS #1
They were called Outlaws in December 1960.
They used cowboy clothes, and their songs were about that subject.

Mike Berry (vocals)
Billy Kuy (guitar)
Reg Hawkins (guitar)
Chas Hodges (bass)
Bobby Graham (drums)
A superb band, they were approached by the late, mythical producer, Joe Meek.

From The Bobby Graham Story :The Outlaws became a Meek house band, backing up Mike Berry and John Leyton as well as recording on their own. Meek's unusual approach to songwriting made an impression: "He used to come to us with demos of him singing what he thought he heard in his head, but he would use strange backing tracks that were nothing to do with the song. Occasionally he might try to play a few notes on the piano. We used to rewrite the things, but we would always see his name on the label, not ours!

You didn't dare criticise Joe, as he might throw a wobbly. I didn't like his occult thing, I'd seen him and (songwriter) Geoff Goddard on a oujia board session. He told me he was talking to Buddy Holly and Mario Lanza. Its no secret we didn't get on. He was a sad little man, a very lonely person. He couldn't relate to people"
They also released two singles:

SIDE A - Swingin' low (Mar 61, HMV)
SIDE B - Spring is near (Mar 61, HMV)

SIDE A - Ambush (Jun 61, HMV)
SIDE B - Indian brave (Jun 61, HMV)

Swingin' Low is a Top Fifty in Aplil 1961
It's Interesting to note that for the flipside Meek used a track that had been written for his abortive space fantasy "I Hear A New World". One of the demo tracks for the project which he had Releaded on his Short-Lived Triumph lavel called "Valley of The Saroos" Was transformed into a lush ballad titled "Spring Is Near"

Joe Meek & The Blue Men - Valley of The Saroos

They released an album, Dream of the west (Dic 1961)

01 - Dream Of The West
02 - The Outlaws
03 - Husky Team
04 - Rodeo
05 - Smoke Signals
06 - Ambush
07 - Barbecue
08 - Spring Is Near
09 - Indian Brave
10 - Homeward Bound
11 - Western Sunset
12 - Tune For Short Cowboys

Dream Of The West is a concept album on the topic "The Wild West"
Ritchie Blackmore hasn't met The Outlaws yet, it's Billy Kuy playing guitar. All 12 tunes are composed by Joe Meek under his standard pseudonyme Robert Duke. With a duration of only 26 minutes
More demos from "I Hear A New World " Were used , "Entry of The Globbots" became the comical "Tune for short Cowboys",while "Around the Moon" was transformed into "Husky Team" a tune recorded by another Meek group (The Saints) some time later .

Joe Meek & The Blue Men - Entry of The Globbots
The Blue Men - Orbit Around The Moon
The Saints - Husky Team
The Outlaws - Ambush (unreleased Joe Meek's Mix)
The Outlaws - Tune from Short Cowboys (Unreleased Joe Meek's Mix)

10 Windy (2:10) (Friedman)
11 Empty Highway (2:39)
12 Look At The Sun (2:56)

Members: Rob Freeman, Ian McLintock
Sun Dragon was a group associated with producer Derek Lawrence, and their studio sides included accompaniment by Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord, and Ian Paice, in the time after the latter three had given up on Roundabout

Rob Freeman (guitar and vocals)and Ian McLintock (bass and vocals)never quite achieved rock stardom, but it wasn't for a lack of talent or effort, and their career together unwittingly serves as a superb example of the shifting tides of the British rock scene in the 1960s and early '70s.
Freeman and McLintock first worked together in the Others, an R&B combo from Southwest London whose lone single, a cover of Bo Diddley's "Oh Yeah," was a well crafted rave-up in the manner of the Rolling Stones and the Pretty Things.
, along with an unreleased follow-up, but by 1966 the Others had split and Freeman and McLintock had formed a new band, the more pop-oriented Sands. There was more than a bit of nascent psychedelia in Sands' music, especially their cover of the Bee Gees' "Mrs. Gillespie's Refrigerator" and "Listen to the Sky," an original that ends in a bizarre noise coda that quotes Holst's he Planets! After one single Sands fell apart, despite management by Brian Epstein, but Freeman and McLintock soldiered on with a new project, Sun Dragon, which scored an almost-hit with their cover of the Lemon Pipers' "Green Tambourine" in 1968 (with typical luck, their label's pressing plant went on strike as the single was starting to gain radio play, prematurely ending its run on the charts). Sun Dragon's music was more polished and calculatingly commercial than their earlier efforts, with polished production and a strong emphasis on covers, but the group's first and only album
